Joint Workshop: Circular Economy of EV Batteries

Time: 24-25 May 2018

Venue: Innopoli 1, Tekniikantie 12, 02150 Espoo; Finland

European Commission has recently called for action in order to establish European lithium-ion battery manufacturing industry and ecosystem. Following that, a European Lithium Institute is being established as a cross KIC action of European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT). The European ecosystem should involve all the parts of the value chain from mining of raw materials to second life applications and recycling of used batteries, following the principles of Circular Economy (CE). EIT RawMaterials is contributing to the building of the ecosystem, and new tools for multi stakeholder life cycle assessment in CE and analyzing the theoretical and practical limits in recycling processes are developed in the Finnish national CloseLoop project funded by the Strategic Research Board at Academy of Finland.

We are inviting European stakeholders (industry, researchers, students) in all parts of the lithium battery value chain to a joint workshop to learn how the European battery ecosystem is evolving, what are the specific European challenges, and what kind of new analytical tools can be used for the ecosystem optimization following the CE principles.
The workshop is free of charge but a 50 € penalty is charged for late cancellations after 21 May 2018. The number of participants is limited to 100. Preference is given to EIT RawMaterial Members and Stakeholders of the CloseLoop project.

Who should attend?

  • Industries producing, refining and recycling battery raw materials.
  • Environmental and sustainability managers of automotive and energy storage industries.
  • Second life application developers.
  • Research institutes developing lithium batteries and/or CE concepts.
  • Potential battery ecosystem participants, who would like to benefit from shared network level knowledge (anonymized and aggregated assessment results) in planning the most suitable mode for their participation.
  • Design tool and collaboration platform developers.

Key takeaways:

  • EIT and the European Battery Ecosystem
  • Network LCA: how to approach LCA in Circular Economy including multiple stakeholders
  • How to analyze and compare different recycling options
